In true Aussie fashion, Perth has a buzzing craft beer scene. There’s something unique on tap for you to try, and naturally, you’ll want to focus on the city’s best breweries. In our estimate, these five establishments deserve your attention.
1. Gage Roads, Fremantle
Gage Roads was formerly A Shed, the historic warehouse on Victoria Quay. The brewpub launched this year and is already winning praise as one of the best craft breweries in Perth. Out here, you enjoy lovely port views. The beers on tap, all of which are brewed on-site, are top-notch. Single Fin’s smooth tropical flavour and crisp finish were made for Aussie summers. Pipe Dreams is a light-bodied ale with a refreshing citrus flavour. Matso’s famous ginger beer is also on the menu. The food menu is a seafood riot of octopus, battered fish, snapper crudo, oysters with lemon and mignonette dressing and fish finger sando. The tacos are a standout and pizzas don’t disappoint. Come here in the evenings to catch the sunset and relax with a cold one.
2. Blasta Brewing Company, Burswood
Blasta is a pet and kid-friendly brewery that has large indoor and outdoor dining areas. The unique and award winning beers are excellent, to say the least, and paddles make it easy to try the wide range of delicious frothies on offer. As quoted by them, their aim is to “push the boundaries of beer making and offer world-class products along the way.” The creative and inventive brews coming out of Blasta backed by the sheer amount of awards they’re picking up along the way is proof of that. The food is delicious, with a decent choice for vegetarians and vegans. Wine and cocktails are also on the menu – all in all, Blasta Brewing is definitely one to put on the list.
3. Little Creatures, Fremantle
Little Creatures is an award-winning brewery serving a smashing range of year-round, seasonal and limited release craft beers. Their pale ale is flavourful and hits the right spot. Their juicy IPA has the right citrus-pithy hops balance. Other beers on tap include Pacific Ale, the popular XPA and Freo Lager, and apple cider. The wine selection is pretty good. You can dig into delicious wood-fired pizza or go for the share bites that feature pork belly, lamb, octopus and oysters. There are vegetarian options, salads, dessert and a kid’s menu. Little Creatures is child-friendly and spacious, with a Great Hall and outdoor seating areas.
4. Otherside Brewing, Myaree
Otherside Brewing is the home of advanced experimental brews, with a core range and seasonal releases. Their Anthem India Pale Ale has won WA Good Food Guide’s ‘Beer of the Year’ gong. Their other beers are also not to be missed. Cloudburst Hazy IPA has an appreciable juicy aroma and velvety mouthfeel. Social Classic Lager is a classic lager brewed in the Helles style. It is a somewhat difficult style for craft brewers to recreate but Otherside Brewing has got it right, ensuring a balance of malt sweetness with floral hops and subtle bitterness. Harvest Red Ale is a another rich and balanced brew. On-site food trucks dish out delicious grub, with the fried chicken burger taking top spot. The fire pits keep you warm and cosy on a cool winter evening.
