Restaurant Review: A Hidden Gem of Italian Delights
If you ever find yourself in Guildford, make sure to venture behind the Guildford Hotel, where you’ll discover a hidden treasure of Italian cuisine. As we approached the restaurant, the warm and inviting glow of the neon light outside beckoned us in, and stepping inside, we were greeted with an equally welcoming interior. The centerpiece of the open kitchen was a massive woodfire oven, which immediately caught our attention, and the well-stocked bar promised delightful libations. Even though we hadn’t made a reservation, the attentive waitstaff graciously accommodated us, ensuring we could enjoy our meal before our scheduled event. We were fortunate enough to be seated by the window, granting us a view of the lively Guildford nightlife as it strolled by.
To complement our dining experience, we perused their thoughtfully curated wine list, which paid homage to the Italian flavors offered in the restaurant. Opting for a glass of Sangiovese each, we settled in to explore the menu. Due to time constraints, we decided to indulge in their tapas selection, and we were pleasantly surprised by the variety and authenticity on offer in this cozy eatery.
Our first bite, the funghi arancini, was a symphony of textures and flavors. The outer crispness perfectly complemented the boldness hidden within. Moving on to the bruschetta Italiano, we were treated to a delightful twist on a classic. Homemade roasted peppers and provolone cheese took center stage, providing a departure from the traditional tomato and basil, which was a welcomed surprise. Next, we delved into the Polpette Pomodoro, a dish that would make any Nonna proud. The tender meatballs, accompanied by a sauce that was nothing short of perfection, left us with a satisfied smile and a metaphorical “chef’s kiss.” And let’s not forget the Agnello, a dish bursting with flavor. Tender lamb, bathed in a chianti and roasted garlic sauce, graced our palates. It was a dish so delectable that even Sam Kekovich himself would be fortunate to try it.
As we relished the flavours of Italy, we were treated to the mesmerizing sight of the chef deftly tossing pizza bases in the open kitchen, while the bartender artfully crafted cocktails behind the bar. The overall ambiance of the restaurant was simply enchanting, and based on the tapas menu alone, we have already decided to return and explore the rest of the offerings available.
If you’re seeking a tranquil evening on the eastern side of town, this hidden gem is the perfect spot for a romantic date night or a lovely gathering with family and friends. Whether you’re captivated by the warm glow of the neon light, the aromatic woodfire oven, or the delightful flavors of Italy, this restaurant will surely leave you satisfied and eager for your next visit.
