Ah, gin! A beloved drink enjoyed across Perth by some of the classiest spirit drinkers… with exceptions of course.

Gin holds an important place in Perth, with numerous gin distilleries spread across the WA land from as far down as Margaret River and across to Esperance. Gin distilleries in Perth are a-plenty but it does beg the question – which gin distilleries are the best?

We’re spilling the tea (or should we say gin?), on which gin distilleries you should have on your radar.

Pour yourself a G&T and enjoy the delicious read.

     Old Youngs

    1.  Old Youngs

Old Youngs has made quite the name for themselves amongst spirit drinkers.

Owned and operated by James Young and his close team, they have completely revamped the distillery.

Formerly known as the Wild Swan, the brand had a change in 2016 when James Young took over operations. Since James Young’s ownership, Old Youngs has seen award after award. Taking the trophy for the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards in 2017 and 2018, as well as countless awards for their individual gins – Old Youngs’ gin deserves your recognition.

Their Six Seasons Gin in particular has really stirred excitement. Infused with Australian botanicals: Tusan Juniper, Coriander, Angelica, Bush Mint, Sea Parsley, Juniper Myrtle, Lemon Myrtle, Thryptomene and Desert lime. The Six Seasons Gin blends together these herbal ingredients to deliver an earthy, savoury and high ABV gin.

In addition, the Six Seasons Gin pays tribute to the six seasons of the Noongar people indigenous to the Swan Valley. The gin has written a beautiful narrative both in its story and in its flavour.

You really can’t go wrong with any of Old Youngs’ gins. If you waltz into a bottelo looking for a quality spirit to impress your friends with, there’s a high chance the staff will pass you an Old Young.

    Little Things Gin

    1.  Little Things Gin

It’s the Little Things in life that make a big difference and by Little Things, we mean a bottle of gin from the Little Things Gin distillery.

Little Things Gin started off where all good things begin, as a side hustle! The three musketeers Mick, Jack and Tom started working on Little Things gin in 2018, spoiling their friends and family with their homemade gin. Word spread like wildfire of their incredible spirit… fast forward to today, their distillery in Subiaco is one of the hottest locations in the area.

With a wide selection of gin blends from Australian Botanical Gin, Australian Dry Gin, Tempranillo, Blood Orange and more – you’ll be like a kid in a candy shop trying to decide where to start! I mean, alcohol is pretty much the equivalent of candy for adults… amirite?

Enjoy Little Things at their distillery (with the accompanying restaurant), online or in one of their masterclasses.

    Swan Valley Gin Company

    1.  Swan Valley Gin Company

Nestled amongst the great beauty of the Swan Valley region, resides the Swan Valley Gin Company.

The Swan Valley region holds a respectable history in the gin world with the first vines planted by European migrants in 1829. By the 1960s, the land was one of the biggest producers of fortified wines in Australia. Today, the land continues to flourish and spoil distilleries with the finest fruit and botanicals.

Owners of Swan Valley Gin Company Loraine and Martin have been running the distillery since they bought the vineyard in Baskerville in 2007. The couple were determined to bring new life to the gin world, planting 2.5 hectares of Muscat a Petit Grains vines and in 2008 established the Pandemonium Estate. In 2015, they proudly opened their cellar door, selling a variety of gin styles with a unique Spanish twist.

Since opening their cellar doors, the distillery has been a go-to spot for gin connoisseurs. If you’re hosting a gin tour, this is an essential stop for you and your mates.

Find their gin at one of the many stockists they supply, at their cellar door in Baskerville or even join them for one of their gin construction classes.

    Sin Gin

    1.  Sin Gin

Tastes so good that it’s gotta be sinful.

Sin Gin is a boutique distillery born and bred in Perth. The distillery spawned from a conversation between owners Kate and Mark who once upon a time daydreamed of distilling their own gin when they worked together at The Murray Hotel in West Perth.

A year later in 2017, they made their dreams come true with their first product release. And boy-oh-boy did it grab the attention of Australia winning 1 Gold, 3 Silver & 2 Bronze medals at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards in Melbourne.

With each year, Kate and Mark continued to develop their business; establishing their distillery at Swan Settlers Market in the Swan Valley in 2019, releasing their complete Seven Deadly Sins Range as well as the Australian Aquavit, Original Sin and Perth Pink gins.

Just like the real 7 deadly sins, we recommend trying out all 7 gins. Find tastings and sales in Fremantle or purchase at independent retailers or at your local bottle shop. If you’re looking for the full experience, Sin Gin’s distillery tours and tastings are a delectable experience not to be missed.

    Republic of Fremantle

    1.  Republic of Fremantle

Fremantle. The port city of Western Australia. Renowned for fun-loving hippies, buskers and colourful characters. Fremantle boasts a great charm and edginess, including the incredibly aesthetic distillery, Republic of Fremantle.

Republic of Fremantle is a trendy urban distillery in a classic old warehouse in Freo’s west end. The distillery is a joint venture between two Freo locals Jason Townes and Matt Giudice (the legends behind Fremantle’s Ronnie Nights and Strange Company).

What makes the Republic of Fremantle unique is the use of their own grape-based spirit from Verdelho grapes from Oakover in the Swan Valley. Combining innovative grape to glass techniques, every step of the process has been given utmost consideration. They’ve truly perfected their distilling and production practices.

The Republic of Fremantle are passionate about making gin a drink accessible for everyone, encouraging education for the newbie gin drinkers and delivering experimental concoctions for the gin experts.

If you’re looking to dip your toe into the world of gin, Republic of Fremantle will offer you a world of information and plenty of delicious samples to enjoy on your visit. We recommend heading down to their insta-worthy distillery in Freo over the weekend or keeping an eye out for their unforgettable gin experiences.

    Gin?

    Did someone say gin?

There are many noteworthy gin distilleries spread across Perth and WA. If you think we’ve missed a distillery on this list, let us know! We love a good recommendation.
