Making Willy Wonka look tame
Willy Wonka may have had a fancy chocolate factory with his own staff of Oompa Loompa and glorious chocolate fountain. But FRY’d, with its plentiful bright pink, bohemian interior, mouthwatering fried ice cream and instagram-worthy everything will make you never want to leave. Willy Wonka’s factory has got nothing on FRY’d!
FRY’d brings to Perth that which children adore and which adults claim they’ve outgrown – ice creams that are deep fried. The idea for the modern (fried) ice cream parlour spawned from Maria’s Chinese heritage. At the restaurants Maria’s parents owned, dessert was always fried ice cream.
Tong spent her childhood buying different brands of ice cream and gelato and deep frying them at home – all the while giving each its own unique spin. This passion persisted through college. Although absolutely scrumptious, Tong couldn’t find any brand or ice cream shop that served fried ice cream. She decided to be the change she wanted to see.
FRY’d was soon born. What started out as the occasional market marquee, soon became a food truck that brought children in Perth so much joy. Finally, Tong was able to rent a physical store and create her own warm and inviting parlour in Leederville. Here, she could serve her renowned fried ice cream along with a variety of other desserts and drinks.
